Winter temperatures in Newcastle are at their coldest during January and February, when snowy weather is not uncommon. The weather and climate in Newcastle is quick to improve as spring approaches, with temperatures staying well above 10°C / 50°F during April. Following two really bad winters, Newcastle City Council have been planning for the season ahead. And if they get the same freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, they are confident that they are prepared.

The problem is that they are working with tight resources, which means that we can’t grit every road and pathway in the city. So they have to prioritise.

If there is heavy snowfall over a long period of time, they will concentrate on gritting the five main routes across the city, for example the central motorway, the Coast Road and Scotswood Road. They will only return to the other roads when they know that those main routes are clear. This is to make sure they keep people safe on the main roads and do everything they can to avoid accidents.

They have already identified footpaths in each ward where we’ll be concentrating on gritting or removing snow.

If you are having problems with certain paths or roads in Newcastle, there will be a grit bin nearby. You can use this on public footpaths but it shouldn’t be used on your own driveways and paths. Newcastle City Council must insist you buy grit to look after your own footpaths and drives. They are working to crack down on those people who empty grit bins across the city for financial gain and limit other residents’ ability to grit nearby footpaths.
